My brother in law put mouse traps on his couch to jeep his dog off of it. I thought it cruel.

All you have to do is place a few sheets of loose leaf paper on the furniture. Dogs can not find a "crackle free" spot to lay down and will leave the sofa. I used this method for my Samoyed and it worked just fine.
