"LEST THOU FORGET"
"Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons;" (Deuteronomy 4:9)
In some of his final words, Moses warned the children of Israel to "take heed to thyself" and "keep thy soul diligently" LEST THOU FORGET the things God had done. He wanted them to remember how God had worked His will in their lives and for such to remain steadfast in their hearts. We find a similar warning in the New Testament. Hebrews 2:1 tells us, "Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip."
Then Moses exhorted them to, "teach them thy sons and thy sons' sons." God had performed many miracles for Israel since that day when Moses first stood before Pharaoh. If they would but remember all God had accomplished and recite them again and again to their own children, oh what a difference it would make for their future generations and the choices they would be facing.
Likewise, you and I need to continually teach our children and grandchildren the lessons of the Word of God and how they made an impact in our life. We need to always remember that life-changing day when we trusted the Lord and relate that experience with our kids and grandkids. We need to give testimony to the wonder of those many times when the Holy Spirit spoke to us through the Scriptures. When we do that, we not only encourage their faith, but we set an example that will affect future generations. Therefore, let's never shy away from explaining with our families the innumerable blessings and the unspeakable joy of daily walking with the Lord.
These days in which we live, with its everyday mounting temptations, the ever-increasing threats of violence in schools, sex trafficking, and humanistic thinking, those toddlers and teenagers stand in great need of hearing the "Lessons of the Lord" and the "Protection He Provides." Those recollections of our Saviour's teachings also go a long way in reminding us of what we have learned and helps prevent those precious truths from slipping away from our own hearts.
Friends, you and I can surely set aside time each day to teach those children or grandchildren, the unforgettable experiences, and with each one, how the Lord has indeed blessed our never-dying soul.
