What Does Christmas Mean to You?Christmas is about… I have heard that sentence end with many variations. Many of the answers are good, but are they correct? Probably the number 1 ending to that sentence that I have heard is this-Christmas is about getting together with family. Obviously, many get together with their family at Christmas but that is the wrong answer. Here is the Biblical answer as the Apostle Paul wrote it in Galatians 4:4-5“But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.”There is the answer to the question, What does Christmas mean? In God’s time, on God’s schedule, by His divine purpose, God sent forth His Son Jesus Christ. At this time of year our focus of attention towards Christ is seeing Him as a newborn baby boy, lying in a feed trough with some hay in it. But that scene is just the beginning. God’s Son Jesus did not come for us to gaze at Him in a manger. Fast forward from the manger scene to a little over 33 years and we now see God’s Son on the cross, shedding His blood, dying to pay the penalty of sin for all of mankind. There on the cross, Jesus is redeeming them that are under the law. Because of His atoning sacrifice we can, by faith, become a child of God.Let me finish that sentence I started earlier. Christmas is about Jesus Christ coming to earth, born of the virgin, born in the likeness of man, born as God’s only begotten Son, that through His death on the cross He could provide redemption for any person who will come to Him through faith. I’m not against manger scenes, our house has several of them. I am just inviting you this Christmas to look beyond that scene to what Christmas is really about-John 3:16“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
