This passage reminds me of the story of the baptism of Jesus by John. When Jesus came from Galilee to Jordan to be baptized by John, the two had an exchange, detailed in the Gospel of Matthew. John tried to deter Jesus by saying ‘I need to baptize you, and do you come to me?’Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him, I am well pleased."This is a fantastic example for all of us, that all old things pass away and become new, for in that moment, not only did Jesus’ act please God, but it also allowed John to become anew by witnessing such humble devotion. When we step into the light of the Lord we are transformed into new creatures. We repent so that our old sins are passed away, thus we are saved and become new.Human life ends. Life through Christ is endless. Who you are now does not mean that is who you have to be later. If we submit to the Lord and believe, we can change from something that ends to something eternal.
