Matthew 5:1-12 are called the Beatitudes These are the attitudes that a Christian should have (Be-attitudes or Christian character). The poor in spirit - empty of self to leave room for God.Those who mourn - you are mourning over your own spiritual condition (your sins). The meek - humility, you have become teachable. Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness - you want to be taught. The merciful - now you can say you understand because you went through it.The pure in heart - you are now becoming more like Jesus. See Philippians 4:8 for things you should be thinking about. The peacemakers - you don’t look for ways to stir the pot or start fights. Also bringing people to Christ brings peace to that person. The persecuted - you are starting to look more like Jesus. Now people will persecute you just like they persecuted Jesus. These are like steps that you go up when you accept Christ. First you have to empty yourself of yourself. It’s not all about you. You have to get rid of self to have room for God. Then you mourn over your sins. You become humble and teachable and so on through all the beatitudes until you are starting to look more like Jesus.
