Tombili was one of Turkey?s street cats, not really belonging to anyone; but care for by many. Cats have co-habit with the Turkish people throughout history; it?s part of their urban culture. Numbers of people and sometimes local authorities take care of the cat?s needs by feeding them, caring for their health needs, and building and putting up cat houses for cold winter nights.
The domestic cat is a respected and admired animal in Islam, revered for its cleanliness, and loved by the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Muezza, according to Islamic tradition, was Muhammad?s favorite cat. Preparing to pray one day Muhammed discovers, Muezza sleeping on one of his prayer robes. Not wanting to wake the cat, he cut off the sleeve with a pair of scissors.
Tombili was a citizen of Istanbul, roaming on her streets for ten years; all who met the cat loved her. She was the mascot for Kadikoy?s district with her laid back way of life, not only for the cat?s friendliness but her way of leaning against steps. When a photo of her in this pose when worldwide on social networks, the feline became an internet marvel, and she gained cult status.
Tombili is a typical Turkish nickname for a chubby pet, and the name fits the cat to a tee.
Tombili birthplace and date are unknown, but sometime in 2016, she fell ill and died in August of that year. After her death, Mayor Aykurt Nuhoglu of Kadikoy received 17,000 signatures to honor her memory. Local Sculptor Seval Sahin constructed a sculpture of the cat in her chilling pose that gained her fame. On October 4, 2016, the Tombili statue was unveiled to hundreds of people, and Kadikoy?s deputy mayor Basar Necipoglu spoke at the juncture; the event was carried on Turkish TV.
Too good to be true, as evil lives in some hearts, and a month later, Tombili?s sculpture disappeared. Kadikoy Municipality announced on November 8, 2016, that thieves had stolen her statue. ?They stole Tombili statue,? quoted Turkish MP Tuncay Ozkan. He went on, ?They are enemies of everything beautiful. All they know is hate, tears, and war.?
The criminal must have had a guilty conscience because, on November 10, 2016, the thief returned Tombili?s statue to its rightful place, where all can enjoy it for many years.
