There are more #trees on #earth than #stars in the #galaxy...3 TRILLION trees capturing half their weight in #carbon.
Machine learning data indicates outside of urban and agriculture areas, there's room for 2.5 BILLION acres on earth, the size of the United States, for 1.2 trillion new trees to be planted to suck CO2 out of the air.
If humans were to restore a trillion trees...the right types of trees in the right kind of soils...and let them grow to full health, they could store an additional 205 gigatons of carbon. To put that into context, humans have released nearly 660 gigatons of carbon into earth's systems since human industrial activity began. Restoring and preserving earth's forests could take a huge chunk of excess carbon out of the atmosphere. This is an enormous carbon draw down.
As global temperatures rise, scientists look to geoengineering solutions, from planting trees to sucking carbon out of the air, as a means to cool the planet.
