U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced $404 million in new aid to the Palestinian people on Tuesday as he called on other countries to support a ceasefire proposal in the Gaza Strip and redouble their aid after more than eight months of fighting in the region.
Mr. Blinken attended a conference in Jordan titled "A Call to Action: Urgent Humanitarian Assistance for Gaza" to discuss ongoing humanitarian issues as Israeli forces continue to fight Hamas, a U.S.-designated terrorist group. The Secretary of State said his "primary and first message" at Tuesday's meeting was to support the ceasefire plan proposed by President Joe Biden on May 31.
"To all governments, multilateral institutions, and humanitarian organizations who want to alleviate the tremendous suffering in Gaza: Get Hamas to accept this deal. Press them publicly. Press them privately," Blinken said.

In addition to pushing for a ceasefire, Blinken urged other countries to redouble their support for humanitarian efforts in the Gaza Strip.
"Every country can help fill this gap, but some countries that have shown great concern for the suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza - including those that have the ability to provide substantial aid - have provided little or no assistance. Now is the time for everyone to step up. For those countries that have already generously contributed, more should be given."
Blinken said that for decades, the United States has been the country that provides the most aid to Palestine.
