“Liberty woman arrested for making threat against Liberty Middle School
On Thursday February 22nd, 2024 at approximately 5:20 p.m. the Village of Liberty Police Department received a report from staff at the Liberty Middle School that a female individual had made a verbal threat of harm against the Liberty Middle School, specifically that she would “blow this [expletive] place up”. The threat was made to a staff member outside of the building during a heated conversation. The female individual subsequently left the scene. Village of Liberty Police Officers and Detectives immediately responded and began an investigation. At approximately 7:00 p.m. the female was located and taken into custody at the Village of Liberty Police Department. Chiffvon Steele, 42 of Liberty was charged with one count of making a threat of mass harm, a misdemeanor. Steele was arraigned in the Town of Liberty Court and in accordance with bail reform laws immediately released pending further court appearance. Chief of Police Steven D’Agata stated, “The Liberty Police Department investigates any and all threats against members of our school community with the highest level of urgency and thoroughness. While in this instance the investigation concluded that the defendant possessed neither the intent nor the capability of committing the conduct threatened, her statement was nevertheless unlawful and disruptive to the school community. Our department remains committed to working with our law enforcement partners and the Liberty Central School District to not only ensure the physical safety of all students and staff but also to safeguard the mental and emotional sense of safety and wellbeing that is necessary for our educational systems to flourish. To that end we will continue to investigate arrest and prosecute all individuals who threaten our schools wellbeing.”
Criminal charges are merely allegations that a defendant has committed violations of the criminal law, and as such they are not evidence of guilt. All defendants have a presumption of innocence and are entitled to a fair trial, during which it will be the burden of the State of New York to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.”
