These innocuous looking pits are actual Roman death traps.
Spikes were jammed in them and they were covered up, probably with a layer of leaves, for attacking soldiers to fall into and be inpaled.
These are from Rough Castle on the defensive Antonine Wall, Hadrian Wall's northern sister.
