Am I Being Catfished? In recent years, with the increase in Social Media outlets, the dating scammers have increased as well. Social Media platforms that have freedom of speech can be plagued by them, don't worry, there are tell tale signs to look out for.Their profile may have a sexually suggestive photo or one that shows great wealth because they want to stand out in a crowd. Many times they will pretend to be from the armed services and living in another country so it won't be questioned when they need to leave the conversation suddenly. Another job that catfish use is to say they work on an oil rig at sea. They will typically say that they are new to Social Media and this is the first account that they created. In order to get you to feel sorry for them, they will typically have a story that their spouse died and left them with a child or their parents died and they have no family.Oftentimes, they will use profile names with two first names, such as, John Glen, Mary Jane, Robert Alan. They will ask you personal questions about yourself, Where do you live? Are you married or single? Are you happily married? Do you have kids? Where do you work? Can you send me a pic of yourself?Within weeks or sometimes days, they will fall in love with you. Calling you 'Dear' 'Babe' "Queen' or 'King' right off the bat. When they do message you, their use bad grammar. That's not because they are a bad speller, especially if they are pretending to be a professional. They will explain that they live in a different country, their child is in boarding school and they will be coming back home soon.Out of the blue, they will have an emergency. Lost their wallet while visiting a different country and ask you to send them money overseas to a person that will pick it up for them because they don't have any identification. AND that they love you and want to spend the rest of their life with you. They will start sending naked pics of themselves (it's actually not them) and then showing that they trust you to send their pic, why don't you send yours. At that point, they may use those pics to blackmail you since they have your real info, don't do it.Phone calls may happen, but that's only AFTER you send money and it's done to keep you on the hook. They will attempt to lure you off of the website that you met on because it will be easier for them to contact you on Whatsapp or Telegram. They will say that you could talk so much more on these types of apps because they can now talk with you at work.Ask as many questions as possible and then ask the same questions a few days later. Serial liars will not be able to keep them straight. It's like being a detective, ask the questions you already know the answers to in order to trip them up. If they are on the up and up, then their answers will remain the same.NEVER assume you are talking to the person in the profile pic.Don't volunteer too much information about yourself without a collaborative conversation.NEVER send naked pics, money or any type of gift card.Block and unfriend the person and notify the Admin of the website. If you think you are in the grips of a catfish, go to https://www.scampolicegroup.com/ and check their email against the known email scammer database. Also, I will tag the members here that I have found to be catfish! If you run into some, go ahead and add their names.
