The first official flag of the United States was adopted by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. It featured thirteen alternating red and white stripes symbolizing the original thirteen colonies, along with a blue field in the upper left corner known as the canton, which held thirteen white stars representing a new constellation. This design, known as the "Stars and Stripes," became the foundation of the American flag.
Over time, the number of stars on the flag continued to increase with the admission of new states. The current design, with fifty stars representing the fifty states, was adopted on July 4, 1960, after Hawaii became the fiftieth state. This version of the flag has been in use ever since, making it the longest-running design in American flag history.
