Wow! Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has officially signedanother bill governing the bodies of our women. After first beingconsidered back in early March, DeSantis has now given hisapproval on legislation that requires incest and rape victims toshow proof of their trauma in order to get an abortion.Last year, Florida introduced a bill banning abortions after 15weeks, following the historic overturning of Roe v. Wade - theright to an abortion. A year later, on Thursday (April 13), theRepublican governor signed the Heartbeat Protection Act intolaw, which bans abortions after six weeks, and also requiresvictims of human trafficking, incest and rape to provide proof forany exception from the ban. The only acceptable documentationincludes medical evidence, police reports and/or restrainingorders. It is reported that the exceptions would also end at 15weeks of pregnancy. Furthermore, the new six-week ban will notgo into effect until Florida's Supreme Court overturns itsprevious laws on abortion. However, once it does take effect, itwill make Florida one of the most restrictive states in regards toundergoing an abortion. Elsewhere, it is reported that a recentpoll by the University of North Florida found that three-quartersof Florida's population is opposed to a six-week ban.Speaking on the newest piece of legislature, Gov. DeSantis says,"We are proud to support life and family in the state of Florida. Iapplaud the Legislature for passing the Heartbeat Protection Actthat expands pro-life protections and provides additionalresources for young mothers and families." In addition to Gov.DeSantis' comments, a press release accompanied the news ofthe new law and in it, New York and California governments werecriticized for going against the grain and providing its residentswith safe access to abortion services.
