WHAT POWER
The wild geese fly in the autumn sky
And south is the course they pursue
For nature tells them frost is nigh
And instinct tells them what to do
No meeting of delegates in a great hall
No flowery speeches, no intricate plan
No red tape to mind, just an understood call
What do you make of it, competent man?
With a heritage born of a higher estate
What 'vantage do we, from our reason derive?
Except that we understand better to hate
And are better prepared to enslave and drive
What course has a man being left on his own?
Without the conventional things to refer
When the wild billows roll and stout timbers groan
And stinging salt causes the vision to blur
With a gibbering death's head, there on the mast
And his last earthly hope being torn from his breast
What dominant power sustains to the last..
And leads him to flight when he wishes to rest
Now we come to a fact without kith kin or clan
And we know that in times, when no order is board
The same power governs the course of man
As is made manifest in the flight of the bird
