What is the Joy Before Us?
Heb 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
We are to patiently run the race of the Christian life and follow Christ whatever the circumstances because of the joy that is set before us. That joy is the outcome of the obedience we give to Christ. We keep witnessing, keep praying for lost people, we keep giving to the Lord through the church, we keep being committed to our families, we keep serving the Lord in the church because of this great promise.
There is a joy set before us. It is God's reward for doing His will and not giving up. To find this joy we need to lay aside those hindrances in our life that keep us from running this race patiently.
We get our primary motivation for staying faithful to the Lord because of Jesus example. He became obedient to death on the cross not because He looked forward to it but because of the future exaltation and necessity of His sacrifice for our sins. If we only serve the Lord for what we will get out of it now we are wrong. We should not serve the Lord until we get discouraged and quit. We should keep on, keeping on because of the joy that is set before us that is out. It is that joy that the hymn writer said. "You will be glad that you let Him have His way with thee". The joy set before us is much of the theme of my message Sunday: “What it means to Look to Jesus. “Please pray that it will be a blessing.
