Not only is this a Native American belief but also goes along with scripture in the bible where it says "it is better to give than to receive" and also “Give generously to the poor and do so without a grudging heart;" In fact, it has over 30 references to giving to the poor and helping the needy. And it comes with a promise, that when we do, our Creator will reward us, even though that should never be the reason. So this belief of teaching their children to give their best gift to another also goes with other scriptures that say "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it" ** Wondering how many have failed to teach their children this selfless concept of sacrificial giving--and the most profound is our Creator giving up His Only Son (His best gift) for our redemption.
