Spring is chick time at our place. We've raised a few each year for a while now. This goofy face is Baelien, an Ayam Cemani, a unique breed originally from Indonesia. They have a rare gene that affects their pigmentation. The bones, organs, feathers, skin, eyes and meat are all black. One of our 2 little ones has a few tiny touches of white and named Tufty because of it. She/he would have most likely not been kept alive at a strict breeder. The most expensive and prized birds of this type have no other color from tip to tail. They have been used for magical rituals through history because of this unique feature. We have one (Blanka) we bought in 2020 who is such a gentle addition to our flock. When an opportunity to purchase 2 chicks at a very reasonable price opened up, we jumped at it.
