At the beginning of today's Gospel reading on the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant in Matthew 18:21-35, we read the following:Peter approached Jesus and asked him,“Lord, if my brother sins against me,how often must I forgive him?As many as seven times?”Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times."Jesus thus reverses what Lamech, son of Methushael, said in Genesis 4:23-24:Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; you wives of Lamech, hearken to what I say:I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me.If Cain is avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy-sevenfold.Forgiveness must equal revenge, otherwise the vengeance sought for others will be the vengeance we receive.
