Do you remember when our country considered itself to be the great melting pot? As an example, 3 out of 4 of my grandparents were the children of immigrants, their parents arriving in the US between 1858 and 1881. They could not speak English when they arrived but made sure their children did! The immigrants all married others from the "home" country BUT their children did not. Thegrandchildren married for love not based on ethnic background.Do I believe that the immigrants ever fully assimilate, no I don't, but the children were expected to be Americans by both their parents and society! German may have been spoken by the parents but only 1 of my grandparents spoke any. My family story isn't really any thing special. It just illustrates the melting pot.I believe a big part of our country's problems are being based on identity. Rather than rejoicing in the melting pot, taking all the differences mixing together and creating something greater we have decided to celebrate all of the differences. We are promoting separate pots. Let's figure out a way to work on creating synergy to move forward as Americans once again! Keep researching, keep speaking up and keep preparing!
