Another mind-altering chemical, lithium, has a very similar mental effect. It is normally prescribed to treat manic (a.k.a. bipolar) depression as an anti-depressant but in reality, it's more of a general anti-emotion 'drug' instead. That's why lots of patients regularly 'forget' to take their pills, as they quickly find that they rather prefer depression than being a numb, easily suggestible, emotion-less 'vegetable'. Even in cases where they're willing to accept this treatment, it's barely ever a seamless process. One of the most problematic aspects of lithium is dosing. It often takes years (of trial and error) to find out, the correct dosage that works for the individual. Yet in some regions it's been proposed to force drug the entire population with lithium through the water network. They argue that it could prevent a great deal of (teen) suicides. (And probably cause a lot more on the other end of the spectrum). Their idea is basically the distopian movie 'Equilibrium'. Hopefully, poisoning our water sources with lithium will never become widespread practice (as spraying us with it already has), but guess which widely used mass product is 'contamined' with significant amounts of lithium? That's right, it's those nasty test swabs! And many people use them daily. So if you wonder why their personality changed, or where sound reason has apparently left them, or simply how come they aren't angry despite what is being done to them, just know it's probably due to lithium poisoning.
