The self-titled album by Blood, Sweat & Tears. How many of you still have your copy? While this album was released in 1968, "Spinning Wheel" was released as a 45 single and had peaked at the #2 position on the Billboard Hot 100 in July of '69. This was also Columbia Records' best selling album for 1969. "Spinning Wheel" was originally released, incidentally, by Brenda Holloway in 1967.
"Spinning Wheel" was nominated for three Grammy Awards in 1970, winning Best Instrumental Arrangement. It was also nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year; the album had also won the Grammy for Album of the Year. David Clayton-Thomas, who had written the song, had described it as being "written in an age when psychedelic imagery was all over the lyrics. It was my way of saying, 'Don't get too caught up, because everything comes full circle'."
Incidentally, the album version of "Spinning Wheel", ends with the 1815 Austrian tune "O Du Lieber Augustin". This was edited out of the 45 version. Group founder, Bobby Colomby's comment at the end, "That wasn't too good", followed by laughter from the rest of the group, was, according to producer James William Guercio, inserted at the last minute after the end of the master tape had been accidentally recorded over by the studio engineer.
