Eliza Johnson became First Lady when her husband Andrew assumed the presidency after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. She taught her husband how to spell and pronounce words properly, but tuberculosis prevented her from being hostess, a role assumed by their daughter Martha Johnson Patterson, who milked cows at the White House every morning.
