“Maplecroft” (left) is the house on French Street in Fall River, MA that Lizzie Borden and her sister Emma purchased in 1893 after Lizzie was acquitted of the murder of her parents. They lived there together for eleven years and then Emma moved out; later stating "The happenings at the French Street house that caused me to leave, I must refuse to talk about. I did not go until conditions became absolutely unbearable. Then, before taking action, I consulted the Rev. A. E. Buck who for years had been the family spiritual advisor. After carefully listening to my story, he said it was imperative that I should make my home elsewhere.”
After Emma left Maplecroft, (1905) she lived for awhile with friends in Fairhaven, MA. Then she lived with the Reverend Buck and his family until 1909. From 1909 to 1913 she lived with her cousin Preston Gardner, on the east side of Providence, R.I. From 1913 to 1919 she lived at “The Minden” (an apartment building) in Providence. In 1920 she moved to Newmarket, NH, where she shared a house on Main Street (right) with a spinster woman named Annie Connor. Annie Connor owned the house and occupied the downstairs, while Emma occupied the upstairs. It was the last place Emma lived. Lizzie died of pneumonia on June 1, 1927, in Fall River. The day Lizzie died, Emma had an accident and broke her hip. She died due to chronic nephritis, 9 days later, on June 10, 1927.
