When people say "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's...." they miss the important context of who Jesus was talking to: people trying to have Caesar's government imprison or kill Jesus. He never says what is Caesar's to be rendered to Caesar, He just leads them to believe that He implied that taxes are just because Caesar's face is on the coin. He neither admits tax evasion nor denies it; He pretty much says pay what government deserves, without defining what government deserves.Yes, all authorities on Earth are permitted by God to have the authority they hold. But sometimes, that means there is a lesson to be learned or a righteous assertion of our own authority to be made.If Jews had respected the authority of the Canaanites they would never have gotten their Promised Land.If Moses used the out of context biblical interpretations, which elevate governmemt to highly then the enslavement of his people was permitted by God and he should respect the Egyptions' authority. If Jesus used the same He would not have traveled to spread the good news: because it was illegal for Him to question Caesar's authority by calling anyone else Lord. Jesus said He was His Father: God, Lord, the great I Am, King of kings etc.
