This Constitution Day, September 17, 2021, we celebrate the 234th anniversary when the delegates to the Philadelphia Convention signed the final draft of the federal Constitution on September 17, 1787.
The United States Constitution is so important as it protects our God-given rights and wisely structured our government in such a way that has withstood both calamity and tyranny for over 230 years.
Crucially, the Founding Fathers established the U.S. as a Republic — not a democracy — with the rule of law and robust limits to governmental power.
It is imperative to evaluate how closely our elected leaders respect and adhere to the Constitution on this particular day. That's why The New American regularly publishes our Freedom Index, which rates each member of the U.S. House and Senate by how closely their votes adhere to constitutional principles.
Please read the current issue of the Freedom Index, our first for the 117th Congress. It analyzes ten key votes in each house this year. As stated, scores are based on the U.S. Constitution.
We live at a time when our federal government routinely usurps powers not granted to it by the Constitution. This leads to an increasingly out-of-control Big Government that routinely infringes on our fundamental rights (property rights, privacy rights, religious liberties, right to bear arms, etc.). These infringements have grown worse with the COVID-19 overreach that is betraying the very foundation of our Republic.
The solution is for Americans to hold their congressmen accountable to the Constitution. You can help return our federal government to its constitutional moorings by:
1. using the “Freedom Index” to learn how constitutionally your representative and two senators are voting,
2. taking the appropriate actions to influence them to vote constitutionally, and
3. then spread the word to others in your sphere of influence about how to use the “Freedom Index” to hold their congressmen accountable to the Constitution.
