Why shouldn't federal government own and run wildlife preserves and vast swaths of forests?
Because they have no competition and won't do it right. In fact they are incentivized to do it wrong. Sure they could make a killing letting private loggers log some of the trees, and this would help prevent forest fires. But they won't, because if they spend themselves dry, instead of profiting, bureaucrats push for a bigger budget, and subsequently congress taxes us more to pay for the ever rising budgets.
- Less dense forests are less prone to wildfires.
- These firefighters could be safer, with smaller, less frequent forest fires to battle.
- Lumber prices are skyrocketing, adding to the supply of lumber would help lower costs.
- Selling lumber to loggers could pay for local or state parks departments, or private forest management. We could eliminate federal parks spending overnight.
- None of this would require clear cutting.
There are benefits for the environment and people, but government prefers the constant crisis: because that gives them an excuse to spend more.
No competition means mismanagement, neglect, and wasting more and more of our income.
