About this time last year, I had to close my woodworking business do largely to lack of demand. People just didn't wanna buy heirloom quality furniture and toys. It was cheaper and quicker to go to Walmart or IKEA and get cheap junk. As I was feeling a bit low one day, I saw this quote about ten times."Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently" by Henry Ford.Knowing the Lord doesn't normally shout, but instead speaks in whispers, I took it as a hint. The only other thing I am good at and passionate about is fixing and restoring things, so I decided to give that a shot. Much to my surprise it took off pretty quickly. Business has been good, and I have been happy and thankful. Then I heard about H.R. 842, The PRO act of 2021. Introduced 02/04/2021 by Rep. Scott, Robert C. "Bobby" [D-VA-3] and passed the house, 225 to 206. As of 3/11/21 It is in Senate committee. The bill is a dream shot for unions. Several key points include removing state right to work laws. So, if you want a job, you WILL be paying union dues. It says that secondary strikes are okay, and they can't be sued for it. Redefines what freelance and independent contractor is, folding many into different unions, but without right to work laws. If you want to keep your job, you will join the union. The employer can't even hold company meetings about unionizing. Employees can openly do union business on company networks, equipment, and time without recourse. And, it makes it harder to go to court for anything, instead making most everything go through binding arbitration instead. Both Biden and Chuck Schumer support this bill. Even though some estimates say that over 30 million people could lose their jobs nationwide. This bill is based on the California AB5 law that passed 9/10/19, and put tens of thousands out of work in the state. The pro act even uses the ABC test as originated in the California AB5 bill. In full disclosure, the reason I'm against this bill is because I'm a freelance independent contractor. So, I would be wrapped up tight, and probably forced to either close my new business, merge with another and/or join some union. I encourage you to google this bill for yourself, and google the effects of the AB5 law in California. This bill has been kept in the shade for a reason. I say it's time to take to our soap boxes and start putting some sunshine on it, including contacting your Senators and telling them what you think about it. I for one will be !!!!!
