For the first time since 1997, Texas has a jury nullification bill! Texas State Rep. Mike Schofield of Katy filed the bill (HB 2915), today. The prospects for passage out of committee and the Texas House look bright this year. We will have to see how it goes in the Senate. But we have a bill! Spread the word!More later on who is on the House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee where this will likely be assigned. Here is a link to the Lone Star FIJA website page on the bill where you can see more information on the bill and download and distribute several PDFs on this bill and jury nullification.https://www.juryduty.org/legislationOne of my early forays into seeking redress of grievances with the Texas legislature was testifying on a jury nullification bill in 1995. I formed the Lone Star Fully Informed Jury Association (FIJA) in 1996, got support for jury nullification added to the GOP and Libertarian platforms in 1996, then led an effort on a new, improved bill which got a hearing in 1997. Then, life happened. The core activists in the group moved out of state, etc. I went to law school. So, I am very grateful to Rep. Schofield for his leadership this year and very excited to be making progress on this important initiative for liberty and justice for all Texans.
