The new "latest and greatest" invention of big tech is this thing called "augmented reality", whatever that is. Complete with 3D goggles to take you to lands most will never go. But when I first heard the term I was puzzled as they were hyping it as better than actually being there. After all what could be more real than walking a deserted ocean beach, climbing a mountain, driving a race in competition, or viewing the Northern Light from northern Canada?
Curious as to what it is, and incredibly skeptical of any description that the people who made it with profit in mind are going to be truthful when there are possibly big profits, I started my research.
My first step was to look up the definition of these two words, since the were made into the name of something new, one would expect to find some clarity as to what it is. So, according to the good people at Marian-Webster:
"Augmented":
1 : made greater, larger, or more complete
"Reality":
1 : the quality or state of being real
2a(1) : a real event, entity, or state of affairs his dream became a reality
(2) : the totality of real things and events trying to escape from reality
b : something that is neither derivative nor dependent but exists necessarily
The take away from these two definitions is that what is real is actually real. You can see it, feel it, immerse yourself in it. Your human body understands and remembers the place of its' origin, the atmosphere around it, and every detail of it; The wind, smells, temperature, panorama of it all directly where you are. Better yet, you can touch and add that sense of feel and texture (not recommended for poisonous plants nor venomous snakes or poisonous spiders).
"Augmenting" that place, at that time, is nothing but turning reality into the fantasy of whoever produced what you're watching through the some overpriced goggles. Worse yet, what you are watching is akin to a TV show, complete with writers directors, producers, and corporate management out to turn the highest possible profit.
If I simply want see places I will never get to I'll watch it on the 65 inch big screen.
