Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 (LSB) 13 The end of the matter, all that has been heard: fear God and keep His commandments, because this is the end of the matter for all mankind. 14 For God will bring every work to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil.
As Solomon aged and approached his final years, he wrote of his observations from all that he had experienced.
His dismay with the things that people expend their energy on, he concluded that our walk and relationship with God is the single most important element of our lives that deserves our utmost attention.
Life is a perpetual wrestling match in our hearts between the desire for pleasure and our awareness of ultimate judgment.
The strength and depth of our love for God will be the biggest determining factor as to which we choose.
And though God does not condemn pleasure simply because it is pleasure, we do need to be cognizant of the repercussions of some pleasures or the overindulgence in pleasure versus obeying God.
But in the end, it is our love for, and our obedience to God that is most important.
All else is vanity and chasing after the wind.
Let us not get swept away by that wind. And, instead, let us be firmly rooted in our love for the Creator of all things, Yahweh, our precious Redeemer.

Psalm 51:10 (NKJV) 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Many believers start to clean up by changing their actions.
They change the places they used to hang out at. They may even change the people they hang out with.
They may change their entertainment choices, stop using vulgar language, or stop listening to different types of influencers.
And although that is good, we need to make sure we are addressing our inside, not just our actions.
We can clearly change the outside actions. But that still does not mean we are addressing our insides, our heart.
Just as Jesus mentioned to the scribes and Pharisees, we can change many things on the outside and still be full of extortion and self-indulgence.
Matthew 23:25 (NKJV) 25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence.
The heart must be addressed.
How do we see our heart?
We ask God to show us ourselves, and what is in our heart.
The first place we can start is paying attention to the things we pray for. What are we asking Him for? This shows us what we are most focused on. What we are concerned about. What is important to us.
If our prayers or our thoughts are always about ourselves and our needs, then we can pretty much guess that our focus is on us.
We may think, “what does having a clean heart have to do with asking God for things for ourselves?”
To be clear, it is not that we can’t ask for things, because He wants us to lean on Him. What’s important is what we are always focusing on. That shows us where our concerns are.
A clean heart will not be focused solely on “us”.
A clean heart will focus on God and His desires more than our own.
A clean heart will focus on putting others before our own needs.
And a clean heart will resemble Christ’s walk with us; pure and sacrificial.
What are we asking God for in our prayers today? Do we want to see our neighbor better off than we are? Or do we want what they have and more?
A clean heart will not drool over the success of others, or over wealth and material items. A clean heart will be happy for them and be able to bless them in our words and actions.
What is going on in that heart of ours? Let’s pray together for a heart like that of Christ.

Proverbs 29:6 (NKJV) 6 By transgression an evil man is snared, But the righteous sings and rejoices.
Most believers give little credence to the fact that even we, God’s children, can fall victim to the wiles of the enemy.
The devil is slippery, sneaky, and extremely deceptive in his tactics.
He will rarely make his ways obvious and easily recognizable.
Additionally, many of us feel that we cannot be touched; that we will never fall for the tricks that the devil uses to try to lure us in and ensnare us in sin.
This way of thinking is extremely dangerous. And the fact that any of us think we are untouchable, or above falling, can be construed as pride, which only leads to a fall of the worst kind.
In the verse above, we are told that an evil man is snared by his transgression. This is true and factual.
But let us not forget or fail to recognize that even a person of righteous ways can be tripped up by temptation, falling into the pit of sin that can lead to death.
Sin should not be toyed with. We should not dabble in it, testing the waters or attempting to walk the line. This is reckless, and it never ends well.
The word of God tells us to resist the devil, and he will flee.
James 4:7 (NKJV) 7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
But we know that our flesh is weak and prone to failure. So, how can we expect to resist the enemy, if not by the flesh?
We lean on God, draw near to Him, and allow the Holy Spirit to empower us and lead us away from the thing that is taunting us and attempting to suck us in and kill us.
James 4:8 (NKJV) 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
James stated boldly and plainly that we must cleanse our hands and purify our hearts, leaving our double-minded ways behind.
Then, and only then will we be able to ward off the temptation and the attacks of the enemy that try so hard to trap us.

Psalm 16:11 (NKJV) 11 You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
God will show us the path of life.
How? By His spirit.
He will lead us, help us, carry us, give us strength, wisdom, and understanding as we follow Him.
Ezekiel 36:27 (NKJV) 27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.
He will give us a new heart. It will be pliable and teachable! We will have a new will and attitude toward life.
By walking in His statutes, we will remain in His presence and walk the path He has for us.
In His presence there is fullness of joy!
Joy is not just being happy. It is being strong when facing difficult situations; being able to push through the hardships of life and not be moved from our foundation, which is in Him!
Joy that is rooted in Him is more than we can ever know. It lies deep within us and rises when needed most.
Nehemiah says it best; His joy is our strength.
We will find such joy in His presence as we follow His statutes, and He shows us the path of life!
Nehemiah 8:10 (NKJV) 10 Then he said to them, “Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
We need such strength to walk this path of life!
Amen.
